Zeplin is a design handoff tool that bridges designers and developers by turning Figma and Sketch files into annotated specs and assets.

What is Zeplin?

Zeplin was created to solve a specific and recurring frustration in the design-to-development handoff. Before Zeplin and the tooling wave it contributed to, designers exported assets from Photoshop or Sketch and sent them to developers alongside a document of specifications — hex codes, font sizes, padding values — that had to be manually extracted and frequently went out of date as designs evolved. Zeplin created a structured handoff environment where designs published from Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or Photoshop automatically generated specifications, exportable assets, and code snippets that developers could access without asking the designer for anything.

Zeplin's platform is collaborative — designers publish screens to shared projects, developers annotate and comment on specific elements, and the iteration cycle between design and development runs through the Zeplin interface. The product integrates with Jira, Trello, Slack, and GitHub, connecting design handoff to the project management and code review workflows where engineers already live. The inspection view, where developers hover over design elements to see exact measurements and properties, generates values on demand from the uploaded design data — which means the accuracy of those values depends on the design data being correctly stored and retrievable from Zeplin's backend.

When Zeplin has platform problems, product teams feel the disruption in concrete ways. Designers publishing new screens from Figma or Sketch may see uploads hang indefinitely or fail with an error before the screens appear in the project. Developers inspecting elements in published screens may see incorrect values or find that hovering produces no specification readout at all. Comment threads — used to document decisions and ask questions about design choices — may fail to load or post. The Zeplin desktop app may fail to sync with the web version, showing a locally cached project state that does not reflect recent design updates. Integrations that post Zeplin activity to Slack channels stop delivering notifications when the webhook system is degraded.

Outage.gg tracks Zeplin service status using community reports from designers and developers. If project uploads are failing, inspection is broken, or the app is not syncing, the live status page shows current impact from the Zeplin user community.
