WePay provides embedded payment processing solutions for software platforms, enabling businesses to accept payments within their own products.

What is WePay?

WePay was founded in 2008 as a payments platform designed for platforms and marketplaces — software companies that needed to offer payment processing to their own users without managing the complexity of direct payment processor relationships. The original consumer-facing product evolved into a primarily B2B infrastructure play, and JPMorgan Chase acquired WePay in 2017 to power the bank's embedded finance strategy. Within Chase's ecosystem, WePay's technology became the backbone of Chase Payment Solutions for software platforms, enabling SaaS companies, marketplaces, and platform businesses to embed payment acceptance directly into their products with Chase as the underlying acquirer.

WePay's platform handles merchant onboarding, payment processing, fraud detection, and fund disbursement for platform businesses that have integrated its APIs. The platform enables software companies to offer card acceptance to their own merchants without requiring those merchants to establish direct relationships with payment processors — a model called "payments facilitation" or "payfac." Fraud detection runs on WePay's risk models, while Chase's banking infrastructure handles settlement and fund movement. The embedded nature of WePay within platform products means that a WePay API failure appears to end merchants as a failure of the software platform they're using, not WePay specifically.

WePay API outages propagate downstream through the software platforms built on it, creating a multi-tier failure cascade. A SaaS platform using WePay for payment processing cannot accept customer payments when WePay's authorization endpoint is degraded, even if the SaaS platform itself is fully operational. Merchant onboarding — the process of verifying a new merchant's identity and underwriting their account — fails when the onboarding API is unavailable, blocking new merchants from accepting payments. Settlement reporting fails when the reporting API returns errors, preventing platforms from knowing which transactions have cleared. Disbursements to platform merchants stall when the payout processing backend is degraded.

Outage.gg tracks WePay platform status using real-time community reports from developers and platform businesses. If WePay payment processing is failing, merchant onboarding is unavailable, or the API is returning errors, the live status page shows current impact.
