Vi / Vodafone Idea

Vi — formerly Vodafone Idea — was created from the 2018 merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, two carriers that individually had been losing competitive ground to Jio's disruptive entry into the Indian market. The combination created India's largest telecommunications company by subscriber count at the time of merger, but significant financial pressures have persisted, making Vi's future one of the more closely watched questions in Indian telecom. The company serves hundreds of millions of subscribers across India, though its market position has eroded as subscribers have migrated toward Jio and Airtel. Vi's 4G network covers a substantial portion of India's population, and the company has been building toward 5G while managing cash flow constraints.

The Vi App manages prepaid recharges, postpaid bill payments, data plan upgrades, and international roaming activations. Prepaid recharging is operationally critical on Vi given that a large proportion of subscribers are prepaid customers who need to recharge frequently to maintain active service. When the Vi App or payment infrastructure has problems, those subscribers may find their number going out of service even if they have attempted to pay — a particularly high-stakes failure mode. Vi also operates Vi Movies & TV, a streaming service bundled with some plans, adding a content dependency to the account infrastructure.

Vi network problems present in ways typical of Indian carrier outages: strong signal bars but failed data sessions in areas experiencing core network congestion, calls dropping mid-conversation in areas with incomplete 4G coverage that should be served by 2G fallback, and SMS messages delivering hours late during busy periods. The Vi App frequently shows authentication errors during high-demand periods — end-of-validity recharge rushes, for example — when many subscribers log in simultaneously before their plans expire. Recharges made through third-party UPI apps like GPay or PhonePe credit correctly at the payment processor but fail to reach the Vi account, leaving subscribers unreachable.
