What is Uniswap?
Uniswap rewrote the rulebook for financial exchanges when it launched in 2018. By replacing the traditional order book model with an automated market maker (AMM) algorithm running directly on the Ethereum blockchain, it created a decentralized exchange that never goes offline, never requires KYC, and is governed by smart contract code rather than a central company. At its peak during the DeFi summer of 2020 and the bull markets that followed, Uniswap handled more trading volume than some major centralized exchanges — billions of dollars per day settling trustlessly on-chain with no intermediary.
Here's the important distinction about Uniswap's architecture: the protocol itself — the smart contracts — is effectively unstoppable as long as Ethereum is running. But Uniswap Labs, the company, operates the app.uniswap.org interface, and that web app can absolutely have downtime. The interface depends on Uniswap Labs' own backend for token price data, pool information, and routing logic for optimal swap paths. It also relies on third-party RPC providers like Infura or Alchemy to communicate with the Ethereum blockchain — if those RPC providers have issues, the web interface may fail to load wallet balances or execute swaps even though the underlying protocol is running fine.
When the Uniswap web interface is having problems, users see: the app loading but wallet connection failing across MetaMask, WalletConnect, and Coinbase Wallet, token price data showing as $0.00 or "unknown," swap quotes not loading (the "Price Impact" field spinning indefinitely), transaction submission completing in the wallet but not reflecting in the swap interface's confirmation modal, the token list failing to populate on the swap interface, and the Pools section showing empty or returning a "failed to fetch" state for liquidity position data.
