TSA
The TSA screens passengers and baggage at US airports, and its PreCheck program lets vetted travelers use expedited security lanes at participating airports.
What is TSA?
The Transportation Security Administration was created after the September 11 attacks and became operational in 2001, federalizing airport security screening across the United States. While the TSA is best known for its checkpoint presence at airports, it also operates several digital programs that travelers interact with directly: TSA PreCheck enrollment and renewal, the TSA app with its "What Can I Bring?" lookup tool, and integration with airline and CBP systems for trusted traveler verification. Millions of frequent travelers depend on their Known Traveler Number being properly recognized at checkpoints to use dedicated PreCheck lanes.
TSA's digital footprint spans the PreCheck enrollment system, the Universal Enrollment Services portal (UES), which handles biometric appointment scheduling and background checks, and the backend matching system that associates KTNs with traveler profiles in airline reservation systems. The TSA app itself is a relatively lightweight tool but relies on backend content for the prohibited item database. TSA PreCheck data also flows through CBP systems and airline check-in infrastructure, meaning a disruption in one layer can cause KTN recognition failures even when other parts of the system are operational.
Problems in TSA systems tend to surface in a couple of specific ways. Travelers find that their PreCheck status does not appear on boarding passes, even with a valid KTN, because the airline's check-in system cannot verify eligibility against degraded TSA lookup services. The UES enrollment portal returns errors during background check processing or fails to schedule biometric appointments. TSA PreCheck renewal submissions fail mid-process, leaving applicants without confirmation of payment or submission receipt. In airport scenarios, checkpoint verification systems may fall back to manual checks when automated matching is unavailable.
Outage.gg collects TSA service reports from travelers and enrollment applicants. If your PreCheck status is not populating, the UES portal is down, or the TSA app is broken, the live status page shows whether the issue is systemic.
