Telstra is Australia's largest telecommunications company and the only provider with both a national mobile network and a fixed broadband network spanning the entire continent — including some of the most remote and geographically challenging territory on Earth. Originally established as a government-owned corporation in 1975, Telstra was progressively privatized through the 1990s and 2000s. Today it operates the dominant 4G and 5G mobile network in Australia, a national fiber and copper fixed broadband business, a submarine cable network connecting Australia internationally, and enterprise network services for large organizations and government. Tens of millions of Australians depend on Telstra infrastructure even when using MVNOs that run on its network.

Telstra's infrastructure spans mobile towers, fiber backhaul, the NBN Co wholesale broadband network, a satellite service for remote customers, and Telstra's own content delivery and cloud services. The My Telstra app provides bill management, data usage tracking, troubleshooting tools, and plan changes. Telstra's NBN services route through NBN Co's fixed-line infrastructure, adding a wholesale layer — some Telstra fixed broadband outages originate with NBN Co rather than Telstra's own network. Telstra's international cables, including the ASC and Southern Cross Cable, carry traffic between Australia and global internet peers.

When Telstra has a network outage, the effects are felt broadly. Mobile calls fail to connect or drop in areas with normal coverage. Mobile data is unavailable despite signal bars showing service. Fixed broadband customers lose internet connectivity, sometimes across entire suburbs or regions when fiber node or backhaul issues occur. During significant weather events, external plant damage can take Telstra's outside network components offline across wide geographic areas.
