Straight Talk carved out a durable niche in the prepaid market by keeping things ruthlessly simple: flat-rate plans, no contracts, no credit checks, and national coverage through agreements with every major carrier network. Launched in 2009 as a joint venture between TracFone Wireless and Walmart, the brand found its audience in value-conscious families and customers who had been burned by postpaid contracts. Verizon's 2021 acquisition of TracFone brought Straight Talk under the Verizon umbrella, though day-to-day operations and branding remained largely unchanged.

Because Straight Talk is an MVNO rather than a network operator, it routes traffic across AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon infrastructure depending on which SIM card a customer is using. This multi-carrier model is unusual in the prepaid space and means a Straight Talk customer's experience can vary significantly based on which underlying network their device is provisioned to use. MVNO deprioritization policies apply, which can throttle speeds during peak congestion even when tower signal looks healthy.

Problems on Straight Talk often split into two distinct buckets. Network-level issues — dropped calls, stalled data, and spotty coverage — trace back to whichever carrier is providing the underlying service and may affect multiple Straight Talk customers differently depending on which SIM they hold.
