Sky Broadband

Sky entered the broadband market as an extension of its dominant satellite TV business, using bundled offers to drive adoption from its large existing subscriber base. Now a subsidiary of Comcast, Sky UK provides broadband internet — primarily through the Openreach wholesale network — alongside its Sky TV, Sky Sports, and Sky Cinema products. Sky Broadband serves millions of UK households across its standard, superfast, and ultrafast broadband tiers, and competes with BT, Virgin Media, and TalkTalk for the bundled broadband-and-TV market. Sky's Q platform offers a next-generation TV experience with internet-delivered content and a cloud DVR, deeply intertwining broadband quality with the viewing experience.

Sky's fixed broadband products use BT's Openreach infrastructure for the underlying physical connection, which means that Openreach line faults and engineering capacity affect Sky customers in the same ways as other ISPs using that network. Sky's own infrastructure sits above the Openreach layer and includes its broadband provisioning systems, the Sky Broadband Shield parental controls service, the Sky Hub router and its management interface, and the My Sky app. Sky Q set-top boxes and the Sky Go streaming app run on related but separate content delivery infrastructure backed by Comcast's investment in Sky's technology platforms.

Outages affecting Sky Broadband customers often trace to one of two layers. Openreach physical plant issues — line faults, exchange problems, or cabinet failures — cause the connection between the premises and the BT exchange to fail, manifesting as a router that cannot establish a connection. Sky's own provisioning and authentication systems can also fail independently, causing routers to be unable to obtain IP addresses or authenticate to Sky's network. The My Sky app becomes unable to manage the router when Sky's device management platform is down. Sky Q and Sky Go streaming failures are typically separate from broadband failures but can be conflated by customers experiencing both simultaneously.
