What is Quizizz?
Quizizz started as a classroom quiz tool designed to give students a game-show-style experience without requiring every player to answer at the same pace. Unlike synchronous quiz platforms that lock everyone to the same question simultaneously, Quizizz lets students move through questions independently while still competing on a shared leaderboard — a design choice that reduced the pressure of whole-class pacing and made the tool popular in both K-12 and higher education settings. The infrastructure behind Quizizz handles high concurrency events with unusual spikes: a single teacher starting a live game can cause dozens or hundreds of simultaneous connections from student devices within seconds. The platform relies on real-time WebSocket connections for live game sessions and falls back to periodic polling for self-paced assignments. Game codes — the short numeric sequences students use to join — route through a session management layer that maps codes to active game instances, and failures in this layer prevent students from joining even when the quiz content itself is accessible.
When Quizizz experiences degradation, the failure modes tend to be session-specific. Students may see a "waiting for players" screen that never advances, or a game code that returns an error despite the teacher's dashboard showing the game as active. Live leaderboard updates can stall while underlying answer submission continues working, leading to a desynchronized view between teacher and student screens. Assignment submissions occasionally fail silently — appearing to submit on the student side but not registering in the teacher's gradebook — which is particularly disruptive during timed assessments.
