PS Remote Play

PS Remote Play allows PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners to stream their console's output to other devices — playing the same games running on their home console but displayed on a phone, tablet, laptop, or Mac. Unlike PlayStation Now, which streams from Sony's servers, PS Remote Play streams from the player's own console directly, either over the local network for low-latency play at home or over the internet via Sony's relay infrastructure when playing away from home. The distinction matters technically: local Remote Play is limited by the player's home network quality, while remote sessions depend on both the console's upload bandwidth and Sony's relay server performance.

Sony's relay infrastructure for internet Remote Play sessions acts as an intermediary when a direct peer-to-peer connection between the mobile device and the PS5 cannot be established — common in network environments with strict NAT configurations. The relay servers introduce additional latency beyond the direct path, making internet Remote Play more sensitive to server health than local-network play. The Remote Play authentication and session initiation process also touches PSN account services, meaning PSN backend incidents can prevent initiating new Remote Play sessions even when the console and client device are both online and otherwise healthy.

A degraded PS Remote Play session has recognisable characteristics that distinguish it from a healthy but high-latency connection. The stream quality selector — allowing choices between bitrates and resolutions — dropping to a lower tier automatically indicates the relay or connection path cannot sustain the preferred quality level. Video that freezes for 2-3 seconds before resuming indicates buffer underrun, where the receiving device exhausted its pre-buffered frames before new ones arrived. Audio and video desync — where dialogue and on-screen lip movement fall out of alignment — is a specific indicator of variable packet timing on the relay path rather than consistent high latency.
