Plusnet started as Force9 in Sheffield in 1997, building a reputation as a no-nonsense ISP with good customer service and honest communication about what its products did and did not include. BT Group acquired the company in 2007, but Plusnet has continued operating with a distinct brand identity — positioned as the friendly, approachable option in a market where its parent company's brand carries more corporate weight. Plusnet's customer support, based in Sheffield, has consistently scored well in UK customer satisfaction surveys, which the company has leaned into heavily in its marketing. The service runs on Openreach's physical network, using BT's backhaul, but Plusnet manages its own customer relationships and support model.

Plusnet's broadband portfolio spans ADSL2+, FTTC (fibre to the cabinet), and FTTP (fibre to the premises) services, the latter providing full-fibre performance across the growing portion of the UK Openreach network where such infrastructure has been deployed.
