Plaid is a financial data network that securely connects bank accounts to apps like Venmo, Robinhood, and Coinbase through its API.

What is Plaid?

Plaid was founded in 2013 by Zach Perret and William Hockey with the ambition of making bank account connectivity a commodity API layer — something any developer could integrate in a few hours rather than spending months negotiating bespoke data sharing agreements with individual banks. Its Link product, a pre-built UI widget that handles credential collection, multi-factor authentication flows, and account selection, is now embedded in thousands of financial applications: personal finance apps, crypto exchanges, lending platforms, payroll services, and investment tools all rely on Plaid Link to connect users' bank accounts. Visa attempted to acquire Plaid for $5.3 billion in 2020 before the deal was blocked by the DOJ on antitrust grounds.

Plaid is invisible infrastructure — most users of Plaid-powered apps do not know Plaid exists, but they feel its absence immediately when it fails. Apps like Venmo, Robinhood, Betterment, and hundreds of others use Plaid for bank account verification, balance checking, and ACH transfer initiation. An outage affecting Plaid's Link widget or transaction API causes bank account linking to fail across all of these apps simultaneously, creating a wave of user-facing error reports that appear to blame the hosting application rather than the shared infrastructure underneath.

Plaid outages typically manifest as the bank linking modal hanging indefinitely or returning authentication errors when users attempt to connect their accounts, transaction sync for connected accounts stopping and leaving balances stale, identity verification flows failing during account opening for financial products, ACH transfer initiation returning errors for money movement, and the developer dashboard API reporting elevated error rates on institution-specific endpoints. Some institutions' connections are more fragile than others, meaning outages may affect only a subset of supported banks.

Outage.gg tracks Plaid service status through community-submitted reports. If bank linking is failing in your app or transactions have stopped syncing, check the live status page to confirm whether there is a platform-wide issue and receive a notification when full connectivity is restored.
