Piazza
Piazza is a Q&A platform used in university courses where students post questions anonymously and instructors and peers provide collaborative answers.
What is Piazza?
Piazza was founded at Stanford in 2009 by Pooja Sankar, who drew on her own experience of feeling isolated during engineering courses to build a Q-and-A platform designed to make it socially safe for students to ask questions. The anonymous posting option — allowing students to ask questions without their name attached — was a deliberate design choice to lower the activation energy for students who fear being judged for not knowing something. Instructors and TAs can answer questions, wiki-style collaborative editing allows classmates to refine answers together, and the feed becomes a searchable knowledge base for the entire course.
The platform is used heavily in STEM courses at universities and colleges, where large lecture sections generate high volumes of repetitive questions that Piazza's Q-and-A format handles more efficiently than email. Instructors configure a Piazza class linked to their course roster, posting announcements and answering student questions. Integration with LMS platforms including Canvas, Blackboard, and Moodle provides SSO access from the course shell. The platform sends email and push notification digests summarising recent Q-and-A activity, keeping students engaged with answers even after logging out.
When Piazza has outages, the impact is concentrated during the days and hours before major deadlines when student question volume peaks. The platform fails to load or returns server errors, blocking students from searching the existing question history — which is often the fastest way to get an answer to a common question. New question submissions fail to post, leaving students without a channel to reach instructors or TAs. Instructor answers submitted during a session fail to save, meaning the work of responding to student questions is lost. Email notification delivery stalls, leaving students unaware that their questions have been answered.
Outage.gg tracks Piazza platform status using real-time community reports from students and instructors. If questions are not posting, the platform is not loading, or notifications are not arriving, the live status page shows current impact.
