Parler
Parler is a social media platform positioned as a free-speech alternative to mainstream networks, popular with right-leaning users in the US.
What is Parler?
Parler launched in 2018 as a social media platform positioning itself as a free-speech alternative to Twitter, attracting users who felt their political speech was being suppressed on mainstream platforms. The app grew steadily before experiencing explosive user growth in late 2020 and early 2021. Following the January 6 Capitol riot, Apple, Google, and Amazon Web Services removed the app from their app stores and terminated Parler's hosting, respectively, taking the platform offline for several weeks. Parler relaunched in early 2021 with new hosting infrastructure and has continued operating, though its audience and cultural prominence have shifted significantly since its peak.
Parler's platform architecture has had to contend with the realities of operating on infrastructure that has been subject to significant external pressure. The app and website provide the standard social media features — posts, reposts, comments, direct messaging, and a curated feed — alongside video hosting for content that might be refused by mainstream video platforms. The combination of hosting its own media content and managing a social graph creates substantial infrastructure demands. Parler has also gone through ownership changes, including a brief period when Kanye West announced and then walked away from an acquisition.
When Parler's services experience problems, users encounter the standard social platform failure modes. The feed may fail to load or refresh, showing either an error or a stale cached version of content posted hours earlier. Video content, which Parler hosts independently, may fail to play in posts even when the text content of the post loads correctly. Direct messaging may fail to deliver or show messages from contacts. Login problems are occasionally reported, particularly during periods when Parler is experiencing elevated traffic from news events that drive users toward the platform. The mobile app may fail to receive push notifications when the notification dispatch system is degraded.
Outage.gg tracks Parler service status using community reports from users on web and mobile. If the feed is not loading, posts are failing, or the app is not working, the live status page shows current impact from the Parler user community.
