OneLogin

OneLogin was one of the early cloud-native identity-as-a-service providers, founded in 2009 at a time when enterprise SSO was still largely an on-premises category dominated by hardware appliances. The platform provides single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, lifecycle management for user provisioning and deprovisioning, and application catalog access for hundreds of pre-built connectors to SaaS applications. OneLogin was acquired by OpenText in 2023, integrating its identity capabilities into OpenText's broader enterprise software portfolio. Organizations use OneLogin to centralize access control across their application portfolio, enforce MFA policies, and automate joiner-mover-leaver workflows through HR system integrations.

OneLogin's cloud infrastructure processes authentication requests for its connected organizations, evaluating access policies and issuing SAML or OIDC assertions to downstream applications. The MFA engine supports a range of second factors including OneLogin Protect (its own authenticator app), hardware tokens, and SMS. Directory integrations sync user data from Active Directory or HR systems in near real time. App connectors handle SCIM-based provisioning to target applications. The OneLogin admin console provides visibility into login events, policy configuration, and user management — an operational surface that IT teams depend on during incidents.

When OneLogin has an outage, the SSO dependency creates a centralized failure point. All configured applications simultaneously reject logins because SAML assertions cannot be issued. MFA enrollment and verification flows fail. Provisioning events queued in the lifecycle management engine are not processed, leaving new employees without app access. Admin console operations — creating users, updating policies, reviewing logs — are unavailable when the management plane is degraded. API calls from custom integrations return errors. For organizations that have turned off direct-to-app authentication in favor of OneLogin SSO, this means complete loss of access to their tool stack until the platform recovers.
