Obsidian Sync
Obsidian Sync is the official end-to-end encrypted syncing service for Obsidian, keeping notes consistent across all your devices.
What is Obsidian Sync?
Obsidian emerged from Dynalist in 2020 as a local-first note-taking application built around the concept of a personal knowledge graph — a collection of markdown files linked together to form a second brain that belongs entirely to the user rather than a cloud service. The local-first philosophy attracted a community of knowledge workers, researchers, and software developers who appreciated that their notes existed as plain text files they could access, back up, and migrate without any vendor dependency. Obsidian Sync, the optional paid cloud synchronization service, was introduced for users who wanted vault synchronization across multiple devices without managing their own sync solution.
Obsidian Sync's architecture differs from most cloud sync services because it is explicitly designed to complement a local-first workflow: the canonical copy of the vault lives on the user's devices, and Sync acts as an end-to-end encrypted relay between them. The end-to-end encryption means Obsidian's servers cannot read vault contents, which appeals to users with security requirements — the trade-off is that account recovery for lost encryption keys is impossible. Sync includes version history, allowing users to recover earlier versions of notes, which requires backend storage for historical snapshots alongside the current vault state.
Obsidian Sync problems surface as vaults failing to synchronize across devices — notes edited on a laptop not appearing on the mobile app, or merge conflicts generating duplicate file versions when the sync engine cannot determine which device has the authoritative version. The sync status indicator in the Obsidian interface shows a spinning or error state when the connection to Obsidian's sync servers is disrupted. Mobile background sync — where Obsidian syncs vault changes while the app is not actively in use — is particularly unreliable on iOS, where background app refresh behavior limits sync frequency. Remote vault access through the Obsidian Publish feature, which serves static websites from vault content, fails independently of Sync when the Publish infrastructure is degraded.
Outage.gg tracks Obsidian Sync service status using real-time community reports from subscribers across all platforms. If Obsidian Sync is not updating vaults, conflicts are not resolving, or the service is unreachable, the live status page shows current impact from the Obsidian community.
