Nearpod is an interactive classroom tool that turns presentations into live lessons with polls, quizzes, VR field trips, and real-time student response tracking.
What is Nearpod?
Nearpod was founded in Miami in 2012 with a focus on making classroom presentations interactive — turning the passive experience of watching a slide deck into a participatory activity where students respond to polls, complete drag-and-drop activities, submit drawings, and take quizzes embedded within the lesson flow. Teachers share a join code and students enter from any device, seeing the teacher's presentation on their own screen and responding to activities in real time. Renaissance Learning acquired Nearpod in 2021, adding the platform to a portfolio that includes AR BookFinder and Accelerated Reader.
The platform stores teacher-created lessons and curated content in a library searchable by grade level, subject, and standard. Live lessons run in a teacher-paced mode where the teacher advances slides for all students simultaneously, or a student-paced mode where students work through the lesson independently. Formative assessment data — poll results, quiz scores, drawing submissions, collaboration board contributions — is captured during the lesson and available in a post-lesson report. Google Slides and PowerPoint import lets teachers convert existing slide decks into interactive Nearpod lessons without starting from scratch.
When Nearpod has problems during a live lesson, the disruption is immediate and classroom-wide. Students entering a join code receive an error rather than the lesson landing page — the lesson cannot be started. Mid-lesson disconnections drop all students from the session, losing any response data collected up to that point. Student-submitted activities — drawings, open-ended text, quiz answers — fail to save to the teacher's report, meaning the formative data from that class period is unrecoverable. The Nearpod lesson library fails to load, preventing teachers from accessing prepared content during planning or instruction.
