Medium is a publishing platform where writers and publications share long-form articles on technology, culture, business, and personal stories, with a subscription model for full access.

What is Medium?

Medium was Ev Williams' third major contribution to how people publish on the internet — following Blogger and Twitter, both of which he co-founded. Launched in 2012, Medium offered a writing environment that prioritised readability: clean typography, minimal interface, and a distribution layer that could surface quality writing to readers who had no prior knowledge of a writer's existence. It attracted journalists, technologists, startup founders, and a broad range of writers who published long-form essays and commentary that often circulated widely on social media.

Medium has experimented repeatedly with its business model. The Partner Program, launched in 2017, pays writers based on the reading time their stories generate among paying Medium members. The metered paywall gates most content behind a $5 per month subscription. These monetisation layers added authentication and payment infrastructure to what had originally been a fully open platform. Medium's technology stack serves both individual readers browsing its publication and writers managing their posts, stats, and partner earnings from the same web and mobile interface.

When Medium has problems, writers and readers experience different failure modes. The writer editor — used to draft and publish posts — fails to save or submit content during backend degradation, which is an acute problem when a draft exists only in the editor's unsaved state. The reading experience breaks down when article pages return 500 errors or the CDN fails to deliver content. Member login failures block access to paywalled stories, leaving paying subscribers unable to read. Partner Program earnings dashboards become unavailable during backend incidents. The iOS and Android apps sometimes cache stale reading lists without indicating that a refresh has failed.

Outage.gg tracks Medium platform status in real time using community-submitted reports. If Medium is down, the editor is not saving, or login is failing, the live status page shows current impact from writers and readers across web and mobile.
