Marqeta was founded in 2010 with the insight that the card issuance infrastructure powering most payment cards was decades old, controlled by incumbent processors, and impossible to customize in meaningful ways. By building a modern card issuing platform from scratch with API-first architecture, Marqeta enabled businesses to issue physical and virtual cards with programmable spending controls that could be defined in real time — a capability that didn't exist before. That flexibility made Marqeta the infrastructure provider behind some of the fastest-growing fintech companies in the world, including Square, Instacart, DoorDash, Klarna, and Affirm, each of which relied on Marqeta to issue cards with custom authorization logic.

Marqeta's platform processes card authorizations in real time through its Just-in-Time (JIT) funding model: instead of pre-funding an account balance, Marqeta sends an authorization request to the issuer's system in real time before approving the transaction. This allows the issuer to make real-time funding decisions — checking gig worker earnings, verifying expense policy compliance, or confirming BNPL installment availability — before the transaction completes. That architecture makes Marqeta uniquely powerful for programmable card use cases, but it also means Marqeta's authorization response time directly affects how quickly a card swipe completes at a terminal.

Marqeta platform problems propagate immediately to the consumer-facing products built on top of it. A Marqeta authorization API outage means cards issued through the platform decline across all issuer programs simultaneously — gig workers' expense cards, BNPL virtual cards, and corporate cards all fail at the same time if the authorization backend is degraded. JIT funding callbacks fail, preventing issuers from making real-time funding decisions and causing Marqeta to fall back to conservative authorization behavior. Card management API calls — freezing cards, updating limits, issuing virtual card numbers — fail when the issuing management backend is down. Developers track Marqeta's status API and webhook infrastructure for early indication of authorization degradation.
