Kayak is a travel metasearch engine that scans hundreds of airlines, hotels, and car rentals simultaneously to surface the best prices for any trip.

What is Kayak?

KAYAK changed the way people search for flights by aggregating results from hundreds of airlines, OTAs, and hotel chains into a single interface and letting users compare prices without visiting each provider separately. Founded in 2004 by the team behind Orbitz, it was acquired by Booking Holdings in 2013 and has since grown into one of the most-visited travel search engines in the world. The product now covers flights, hotels, rental cars, and vacation packages, with features like Price Alert and Explore — a map-based fare discovery tool — that go beyond simple search.

KAYAK's backend is fundamentally a data aggregation and query routing system. When a user searches for a flight, KAYAK fans queries out to dozens of supplier APIs simultaneously, normalises the responses, deduplicates fares, and ranks results — all within a second or two. That real-time dependency on external supplier APIs means KAYAK's apparent performance is partly a function of how responsive its data partners are. The booking step redirects users to the supplier or an affiliated OTA, so the final transaction often happens off-platform.

When KAYAK experiences problems, searches are the first place users feel it. Queries stall, return incomplete results, or time out entirely with an error message. Price alerts stop delivering emails or push notifications when the notification pipeline is degraded. The mobile app can fail to load search results or trip itineraries stored in the My Trips section. Users who try to manage existing bookings through KAYAK-affiliated links find that redirects fail or land on error pages when the routing layer is having trouble.

Outage.gg tracks KAYAK service status using community reports from travellers. If KAYAK searches are failing, results are not loading, or the app is returning errors, the live status page shows whether others are hitting the same issue.
