Frontier Communications

Frontier Communications has been through more transformation in recent years than almost any other major US internet service provider. Originally a rural telephone company founded in 1935, Frontier expanded aggressively through acquisitions — most notably the purchase of Verizon's wireline and FiOS assets in California, Texas, and Florida in 2016. After filing for bankruptcy in 2020 and emerging reorganized in 2021, Frontier committed to a major fiber build-out strategy it calls "Build Gigabit America," targeting millions of homes with fiber-to-the-premises service to replace aging copper DSL infrastructure. The company operates across 25 states, serving both urban and rural markets.

Frontier's network infrastructure is a patchwork reflecting decades of acquisitions and varying levels of investment. In markets where the fiber overbuild is complete, customers receive FTTP service comparable to Fios and other modern fiber networks. In legacy copper markets that have not yet been upgraded, DSL service runs over facilities with the reliability challenges inherent to aging plant. Frontier's My Frontier app and web portal handle billing, technical support requests, service plan management, and equipment reboots. Service activation and provisioning run through separate backend systems that interact with Frontier's network operations center.

Frontier outages span a range of technical scenarios depending on the local network technology. Fiber cuts in recently deployed FTTP markets affect localized groups of customers. Copper infrastructure failures in rural legacy markets — particularly after storms — can take longer to repair due to the geographic scale of outside plant involved. The My Frontier portal and app become unreachable when Frontier's web infrastructure has issues, preventing customers from self-diagnosing or scheduling technician visits. Equipment provisioning failures during new installs or service changes result in customers who have Frontier hardware that cannot authenticate to the network. Modem or ONT firmware updates pushed by Frontier can cause brief service interruptions.
