ESPN+
ESPN+ is Disney's sports streaming add-on offering live games, original shows, and exclusive coverage across the UFC, MLB, NHL, and more.
What is ESPN+?
Is ESPN down? ESPN+ is a sports streaming subscription service launched by ESPN Inc. — a division of The Walt Disney Company — in April 2018, operating as a direct-to-consumer complement to the main ESPN cable network. ESPN+ carries exclusive live sports including UFC pay-per-view events, NHL and MLB games, international soccer, college sports, tennis, and the 30 for 30 documentary library. By 2023 ESPN+ had grown to over 24 million subscribers, and major live sports events — particularly UFC pay-per-view nights — represent some of the highest simultaneous streaming demand of any sports service, making outages during these events exceptionally disruptive.
ESPN+ is delivered through Disney's streaming technology stack, the same infrastructure that powers Disney+ and Hulu, giving the platform significant CDN scale through partnerships with Akamai and other major content delivery networks. Despite this scale, high-concurrency live events remain the primary outage trigger: UFC main card broadcasts have historically driven sudden viewer surges that temporarily overwhelm authentication and stream-delivery services. College football and NFL playoff simulcast events also create demand spikes, and ESPN's authentication system — shared with cable TV Everywhere logins — adds another layer of failure potential.
When ESPN is down or not working, users commonly report the live stream buffering indefinitely or dropping to very low quality, the app failing to authenticate an ESPN+ subscription during checkout or at launch, the video player loading but displaying a black screen with no audio, error code 403 appearing when attempting to access pay-per-view content, DVR and replay functionality being unavailable, or the app crashing immediately on Smart TV platforms during high-demand events.
