Is Deadlock down? Deadlock is a hero shooter MOBA in development by Valve Corporation, the studio behind Steam, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2. Operating in an unusual semi-secret playtest phase through most of 2024, Deadlock is a six-versus-six third-person shooter with lane-based MOBA mechanics: players control unique heroes, farm souls from creeps and enemies to purchase items, and work to destroy the opposing team's base. The game blends Valve's deep hero design philosophy from Dota 2 with accessible third-person shooter mechanics, creating a novel hybrid that generated enormous interest despite being officially unannounced for most of its playtest period.

Deadlock's unusual launch strategy — distributed through Steam invite chains without formal announcement — allowed Valve to scale gradually while gathering feedback, but also created a situation where millions of players wanted access to a game Valve was officially not acknowledging. By late 2024 the game had hundreds of thousands of active playtesters and an enormous community of content creators, analysts, and competitive players engaged with its evolving meta despite its pre-release status.
