Consolidated Communications

Consolidated Communications traces its roots to 1894, making it one of the oldest continuously operating telephone companies in the United States. Originally serving small markets in Illinois and Texas as an independent telephone company, it has grown through acquisitions to serve residential and business customers across the Northeast, upper Midwest, and Pacific Northwest. The company's purchase of FairPoint Communications in 2017 added significant infrastructure in northern New England and brought Consolidated into the competitive broadband markets of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and parts of New York. Private equity firm Searchlight Capital Partners took a majority stake in 2021, providing capital for an accelerated fibre build programme.

Consolidated's consumer services span fibre internet, DSL, voice, and in some markets managed WiFi and television. The company has been actively upgrading legacy copper DSL infrastructure to fibre-to-the-home, which changes the failure modes customers experience — fibre connections fail differently than DSL, with fewer noise and synchronisation issues but a different set of hardware dependencies at the optical network terminal. The MyCCI customer portal and app handle billing, service management, and outage reporting for residential and small business accounts. Enterprise customers have separate account management channels with dedicated support structures.

DSL-served Consolidated customers experience the full range of copper-network problems: line noise causing sync instability, especially during wet weather when moisture infiltrates legacy cable runs; speed falling well below the provisioned tier due to line quality; and synchronisation failures where the modem cycles continuously without achieving a stable connection. Fibre customers experience cleaner failure modes — either the ONT is online and providing good service, or a fibre cut or ONT failure has taken the connection completely down. The MyCCI portal's outage map, when working correctly, shows known service interruptions by address, though the map requires a working connection to access.
