CenterPoint drew significant public attention during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, when extended outages across the Texas grid exposed the capacity limitations of both the physical infrastructure and the digital systems customers relied on to understand what was happening.

The CenterPoint outage tracker is one of the portal's most visited features, particularly given Houston's vulnerability to hurricanes and severe weather events. After major storms, tens of thousands of customers simultaneously attempt to report outages, check restoration queue status, and find estimated return-of-power times — precisely the kind of load spike that stresses web infrastructure. CenterPoint has progressively invested in improving both the tracker's resilience and the accuracy of its restoration time estimates, though high-demand events still push the system to its limits.

When CenterPoint's digital platform has problems, the effects are predictable. Authenticated sessions expire unexpectedly, forcing re-login and sometimes failing the re-authentication flow entirely. The bill payment screen reaches the confirmation step and then returns an error, leaving customers without a receipt and uncertain whether the charge went through. The outage map loads the page frame but the incident data layer fails to populate, showing an apparently clear map during an active outage event. The mobile app can lose connectivity to backend services and display stale account data without indicating that the information may be out of date.
