U.S. Customs and Border Protection enforces border security and processes travelers and goods entering the United States.

What is CBP?

U.S. Customs and Border Protection was established in 2003 when the Department of Homeland Security consolidated several legacy agencies — including parts of the old INS, Customs Service, and Border Patrol — into a single unified border management authority. CBP is now one of the largest federal law enforcement agencies in the country, responsible for processing more than a million travelers, thousands of commercial vehicles, and an enormous volume of cargo shipments every single day. Its digital footprint has expanded significantly over the past decade as more traveler-facing services moved online, from ESTA applications to mobile passport control.

The agency operates a range of public-facing digital tools. The CBP One mobile app became central to asylum processing workflows under several successive administrations, allowing migrants to schedule appointments at ports of entry. The Automated Passport Control kiosks and the Mobile Passport Control app handle arrival processing at major airports. ESTA — the Electronic System for Travel Authorization — sits on its own separate infrastructure and processes applications from citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries before they board flights to the United States.

When CBP systems experience problems, the consequences ripple outward quickly. ESTA outages strand travelers who cannot complete authorization before departure, since airlines are required to verify ESTA status before boarding. CBP One appointment scheduling failures have a direct impact on asylum-seekers who depend on the app as their primary legal pathway. Kiosk systems at international airports backing up means longer queues and missed connections for arriving passengers. Backend data synchronization failures between CBP and airline systems can cause manifesting errors that delay departures.

Outage.gg monitors CBP digital service availability through community-submitted reports from travelers, immigration attorneys, and logistics professionals. If CBP One is down, ESTA is not processing, or the Global Entry enrollment portal is unreachable, the live status page reflects current impact from users across the system.
