Bolt
Bolt is a ride-hailing, scooter, and food delivery platform operating across Europe and Africa with a focus on affordable urban transport.
What is Bolt?
Bolt started in Tallinn, Estonia in 2013 — then called Taxify — as a ride-hailing startup competing with Uber in European and African markets where the American company's pricing and local knowledge created openings for challengers. The company rebranded as Bolt in 2019 and has since expanded into food delivery, e-scooter and e-bike rental, and car-sharing, building a multi-modal mobility super-app serving tens of millions of customers across over 45 countries. The EU home base and African market strength differentiate Bolt's geographic footprint meaningfully from Uber's more Americas-centric history.
Bolt's platform connects riders with drivers through its mobile app, using location services, payment processing, and routing algorithms that must operate in real time to be useful. The driver app and rider app communicate through Bolt's backend, which handles matching, fare calculation, routing, dynamic pricing, and the review and rating system. Food delivery through Bolt Food adds restaurant order management and a separate courier dispatch layer to the infrastructure. The multi-modal expansion into scooters and bikes adds IoT device management — unlocking a vehicle via the app requires the app, the backend, and the physical device to communicate correctly.
When Bolt's platform experiences problems, riders encounter the most common symptom: the app's loading map fails to show available drivers nearby, or the booking button becomes unresponsive. Existing bookings may behave erratically — the estimated arrival time stops updating, or the driver appears frozen on the map without moving toward the pickup point. Payment processing at the end of a trip may fail, creating ambiguous situations where the ride is complete but the billing has not cleared. Bolt Food orders may stall in the "preparing" status indefinitely when restaurant or courier backend communication is degraded.
Outage.gg tracks Bolt service status using community reports from riders, drivers, and food delivery customers across the countries Bolt operates in. If the app is not loading, bookings are failing, or payments are not processing, the live status page shows current impact from the Bolt community.
