Bitfinex is a cryptocurrency exchange offering advanced trading tools, margin lending, and a wide selection of digital asset pairs.

What is Bitfinex?

Bitfinex is one of the oldest and highest-volume cryptocurrency exchanges still operating, founded in 2012 and operated by iFinex Inc. It became particularly prominent among professional and margin traders due to its deep order books, peer-to-peer margin funding market, and early support for a wide range of trading pairs. Bitfinex is also the entity behind Tether (USDT), the world's largest stablecoin by trading volume, which creates a unique interlocking relationship between the exchange's operations and the broader crypto market's most important liquidity instrument.

The exchange has had a turbulent history that its current users are well aware of — most notably the 2016 hack that resulted in the theft of approximately 120,000 Bitcoin, valued at around $72 million at the time and multiples of that at later prices. Bitfinex survived by issuing BFX tokens to affected users and redeeming them over time, and it continued operating through that event when most exchanges would have collapsed. That resilience, however controversial, cemented its reputation among dedicated traders who value continuity and liquidity above all else.

Bitfinex's infrastructure handles significant load from algorithmic and high-frequency traders who use its websocket API for real-time order book data and execution. During volatile market periods, the platform has experienced degraded performance manifesting as websocket disconnections, order placement errors, delayed trade execution, and the web interface becoming unresponsive. Withdrawal processing delays are also a recurring source of user reports, particularly during periods of high on-chain congestion when blockchain transactions are expensive to batch and broadcast.

Outage.gg tracks Bitfinex server status and platform reliability using real-time reports. If the trading interface is unresponsive or withdrawals are stalled, check the live status page for current community-confirmed incidents.
