Atlantic Broadband

Atlantic Broadband was founded in 2004 and grew through cable system acquisitions in markets largely overlooked by the national cable giants — serving communities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina, and Florida where Comcast and Charter had not built dominant positions. Canadian operator Cogeco acquired Atlantic Broadband in 2012, providing capital for network investment while keeping the brand operating under its existing identity. The combination gave Cogeco a meaningful US presence and Atlantic Broadband access to a larger corporate infrastructure than its previous independent status allowed.

Account management for Atlantic Broadband customers runs through the MyAtlanticBB portal and companion app, handling bill payment, service troubleshooting, equipment management, and service upgrade requests. Like most cable operators, Atlantic Broadband delivers internet service over a hybrid fibre-coaxial network where fibre carries traffic from the headend to neighbourhood nodes, and coaxial cable distributes from the node to individual homes. Node-level equipment failures — amplifiers, splitters, or the node itself — cause localised outages that affect all homes on the same coaxial segment, typically a few dozen to a few hundred households. Headend problems are rarer but affect larger customer populations when they occur.

Atlantic Broadband connection problems usually manifest as the modem going offline and entering its restart cycle — a process that takes several minutes and often fails to restore service during an active outage. Customers find the MyAtlanticBB portal unreachable on the affected connection, requiring a switch to mobile data to look up outage information. Promotional internet speed tiers, when underprovisioned at the node level, can produce slow performance that looks like an outage but is actually a capacity issue — a distinction that matters for troubleshooting but is not immediately obvious. TV service delivered over the cable plant fails at the same time as internet when the physical layer has a problem.
