Decentralized lending protocol on Ethereum and other chains where users borrow and supply crypto assets without intermediaries.

What is Aave?

Aave is one of the largest decentralised finance protocols ever built, managing billions of dollars of crypto assets in non-custodial lending pools across multiple blockchain networks. Founded in 2017 as ETHLend — a peer-to-peer lending experiment on Ethereum — it was rebuilt and rebranded as Aave in 2020 with a fundamentally different model: pooled liquidity where lenders deposit assets and earn variable yield while borrowers draw from the same pool against collateral. The protocol became foundational to DeFi's "money lego" ecosystem, with its interest rate models and smart contract architecture influencing dozens of competitors.

Aave's design is intentionally trust-minimised: the core protocol is smart contracts deployed on Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, and other networks. There is no Aave server that processes loan requests — the logic runs on-chain. However, the web application at app.aave.com depends on several off-chain components: The Graph's subgraph infrastructure for indexing protocol data, RPC providers like Infura or Alchemy for blockchain queries, and Aave's own front-end hosting. Governance proposals are managed through a separate infrastructure stack involving IPFS for proposal storage and on-chain voting contracts.

When Aave is "down," it usually means the web application is inaccessible or displaying stale data rather than the underlying protocol being unavailable — technically sophisticated users can still interact with the smart contracts directly. However, for most users the web app is Aave. Common failure modes include position health factors not updating correctly, transaction simulations failing in the UI before being submitted, The Graph subgraph falling behind and showing outdated pool rates, and wallet connection failures that prevent users from approving transactions.

Outage.gg tracks Aave web application status and reports from DeFi users. If the Aave app is down or displaying incorrect data, the live status page will show current community-confirmed reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Aave outages and server status.

You can check the live Aave server status at outage.gg/services/aave. The page shows real-time community-submitted outage reports, an hourly trend chart, and the current health status.

Aave can stop working for a number of reasons including scheduled maintenance windows, unexpected server failures, network infrastructure problems, or DDoS attacks. Check the live status page on Outage.gg for the latest community reports to see if others are experiencing the same issue.

Go to outage.gg/services/aave and click the "Report an Issue" button. Your report is counted immediately and helps confirm whether a problem is widespread. Reports from multiple users trigger a status change visible to everyone watching the page.

Click the "Notify Me" bell button on the Aave status page at outage.gg/services/aave. Create a free account and we will send you an email the moment Aave comes back online — no app download required.

Many services maintain official status pages with planned maintenance notices. Outage.gg aggregates real-time community-reported outages which often surface faster than official channels.
